Ash Wednesday, Moment For Repentance - Cleric
As christians especially Catholic faithful begin the commemoration of Ash Wednesday, they have been enjoined to use the period as a time for total repentance and submission to the will of God.
Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of lenten season, a period when the Lord Jesus Christ fasted for 40 days and nights.
Speaking with The Hope, Reverend Father Anthony Arinju from St Anthony Catholic Church, Iju Itaogbolu, said Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the lenten season when Christians engage God in prayers, fasting and also give alms.
The cleric said it is a period for Christians to make reparation for their sins and that of the world and a wake up call for total repentance from sins.
He stated that “ashes we put on our foreheads is a reminder that we are mortal and to God we shall return. That unto dust we came and dust shall we return”.
Father Arinju hinted that it is also a period for Christians to express love and total obedience to God by doing His will.
It is a time of self denial and self mortification.
He urged christians to embrace fasting, prayers and almsgiving just as he called on Catholics to participate fully in all the activities of the church throughout this period.
The man of God however, urged all christians to use the lenten period to pray for peace and security of our nation and the world as a whole.
