FIDA Cautions Residents Against Female Genital Mutilation


Nigerians have been urged to eradicate and shun the barbaric culture of Female Genital Mutilation among the Girl child.

FIDA , Mrs Oluwatoyin Odunayo made the call while addressing participants and some stakeholders in Okemyesi area of Ado Ekiti on the danger of the act.

The awareness programme was initiated by the female lawyers to commemorate this year’s International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation with the theme “No Time For Global Inaction: Unite, Fund And Act To End Female Genital Mutilation”

Mrs Odunayo lamented the damages and effect of Female Genital Mutilation on Girls to include excessive bleeding, difficulty in Child birth, infection and inflammation of the female Genitals among others.

According to her, there is no justification for FGM urging the people to stop the act and protect the health of the girl children.

The FIDA Chairperson said ” we must ensure complete elimination of Female Genital Mutilation in our society because it is harmful and killing.

“I enjoined everyone to take this message home and share with everyone that FGM is against human right and has no benefit as painted it does more harm than good to the victim.

Speaking at the event, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State, Mr Olawale Fapohunda said Female Genital Mutilation was a violation of the right of a Girl child adding that culprits would be sanctioned.

Mr Fapohunda noted that Ekiti State government had promulgated laws against the evil practice urging Stakeholders to help in campaigning against Female Genital Mutilation so as to eradicate the practice in Ekiti as soon as possible.

Lawal Approves 28 Games For Osun Sports' Festival

Osun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Yemi Lawal has approved 28 different sports for the upcoming sports fiesta that will cut across the nooks and crannies of the state. This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Sports' Council, Mrs Funmilayo Moradeyo on Wednesday. The approved sports are; football, volleyball, basketball, handball; hockey, cricket, table tennis, chess, ayo olopon, draft, scrabble, boxing; Taekwondo and kick- boxing. Others are; Para- powerlifting, konfu, karate, judo, wrestling, swimming, athletics, badminton, squash, cycling tennis and weightlifting.
